IGCSE / O LEVELS MATH LESSON PLAN 1.12 – Rates

Lesson 1: Common Measures of Rate

SectionDetails
ObjectiveUse common measures of rate (hourly pay, exchange rates, flow rates, fuel consumption).
Activities– Starter (5 mins): Ask: “If a worker earns $60 in 5 hours, what is the hourly rate?” – Main (30 mins): Teach definition of rate; practice calculations with money, exchange rates, and flow rates. Real-life examples: converting currencies, petrol usage. – Plenary (5 mins): Quick-fire quiz with short rate problems.
ResourcesWorksheets, calculator, currency conversion examples.
Time40 minutes: 5 (Starter) + 30 (Main) + 5 (Plenary).
HomeworkSolve 10 rate problems (hourly pay, exchange, flow).
AssessmentWorksheet: calculating and comparing rates.
Past Paper Practice“A worker earns $72 in 6 hours. Work out their hourly rate.”

Lesson 2: Average Speed and Other Rates

SectionDetails
ObjectiveSolve problems involving average speed and apply other measures of rate (pressure, density, population density).
Activities– Starter (5 mins): Ask: “A cyclist travels 45 km in 3 h 45 min. Estimate their average speed.” – Main (30 mins): Teach speed = distance ÷ time. Solve word problems involving average speed, pressure, and density. Include units (m/s, g/cm³). – Plenary (5 mins): Students solve 3 speed/density problems on mini whiteboards.
ResourcesWorksheets, calculator, diagrams of speed/density problems.
Time40 minutes: 5 (Starter) + 30 (Main) + 5 (Plenary).
Homework10 problems on average speed, density, and pressure.
AssessmentWorksheet: word problems on speed, density, and pressure.
Past Paper Practice“A cyclist travels 45 km in 3 h 45 min. Work out their average speed.”
