IGCSE / O LEVELS MATH LESSON PLAN 1.10 – Limits of Accuracy

Lesson 1: Upper and Lower Bounds

SectionDetails
ObjectiveGive upper and lower bounds for data rounded to a specified accuracy.
Activities– Starter (5 mins): Quick warm-up – if a length is 4.3 cm (1 d.p.), what’s the smallest and largest it could be? – Main (30 mins): Explain concept of bounds with examples (nearest whole number, 1 d.p., significant figures). Practice finding bounds for lengths, weights, and times. – Plenary (5 mins): Students solve 5 quick-fire bound questions on mini whiteboards.
ResourcesWorksheets, PowerPoint with diagrams, ruler.
Time40 minutes: 5 (Starter) + 30 (Main) + 5 (Plenary).
HomeworkFind upper and lower bounds for 10 different rounded values (to nearest 10, 100, 0.1, 1 s.f.).
AssessmentWorksheet: finding bounds of given measurements.
Past Paper Practice“Write down the upper bound of a length measured correct to the nearest metre.”

Lesson 2: Bounds in Calculations

SectionDetails
ObjectiveFind upper and lower bounds of results of calculations using data rounded to a specified accuracy.
Activities– Starter (5 mins): Recap: bounds of 7.6 cm (1 d.p.). – Main (30 mins): Teach using bounds in perimeter, area, speed, and density calculations. Work through examples step by step. Discuss importance in real-life contexts (e.g., construction, science). – Plenary (5 mins): Group challenge – calculate lower/upper bounds for given rectangle area.
ResourcesWorksheets, calculator, PowerPoint examples.
Time40 minutes: 5 (Starter) + 30 (Main) + 5 (Plenary).
HomeworkSolve 8 problems calculating bounds of perimeters, areas, and speeds.
AssessmentWorksheet: bounds in calculation problems.
Past Paper Practice“Calculate the upper bound of the perimeter of a rectangle given dimensions measured to the nearest centimetre.”
